Hear directly from our wonderful team
Our volunteers are the backbone of The Elvaston Estate, each bringing their unique skills, passion, and dedication to help preserve this historic treasure. Hear first hand how their experiences have made a difference—both to the estate and in their own lives.
‘Working in the Nature Reserve, Elvaston Castle
for the past two years now, I have supported and
worked alongside three young adults with learning
difficulties and/or autism to carry out conservation
work at Elvaston Castle. For these three young men,
the opportunity to get out in the countryside, work,
connect with nature, interact with others and do a fulfilling job is so rewarding for them, and the group too. They bring so much to each task session. They can see a beginning, a middle and end to a task. Using tools safely, working in teams to build their communication skills, or to take responsibility of a task area. This opportunity to work in the nature reserve has been challenging for them at times, but every day helps to build their resilience, stamina and skill base. They have certainly benefited from working on the nature reserve project, mentally and physically. They are part of a team, contributing and enjoying it too.’
Paul, Specialist SEND Work Provider
'I have been visiting Elvaston for 16 years and have
always enjoyed exploring the grounds. I joined the
volunteering team hoping to give something back to
a place I love, learn new skills and improve my
wellbeing. Twelve months in and I feel I'm doing that
and so much more. I am recovering from n neurosurgery and radiation for a brain tumour. The tumour and treatments have affected me physically - adapting to deafness, managing falls (I needed a walking stick for 18 months), and slower cognitive processing, as well as emotionally - having to step away from my career as a College Business Manager through ill health retirement. I was initially nervous about whether I would be strong and capable enough to be of use. I was encouraged by a fellow volunteer, who told me there was a role for everyone. I'm so glad I tried, because it is the best thing I've ever done! The physical work is rebuilding my strength, stamina and balance, while the benefits of being outdoors, in nature and with lovely people has restored my confidence and helped me to find a new peace and happiness.’
